Commentary for May 31, 2020:

So, we’re picking up on what was teased at the end of Chapter 26 here, with the Babylon Rogues on the hunt for Sonic. That line at the end of the previous page was, of course, a reference to one of the opening cutscenes in Sonic Riders, where it was Jet’s first spoken line in the game. The follow up line, however, is a much more obscure reference to something from the community of Sonic fan creators, particularly an old episode of Sonic Paradox. (I mean, I say ‘obscure’, but honestly, I expect many more people have watched Sonic Paradox videos than are even aware of this comic.)

In any case, I wanted to characterise Jet as kind of an anti-Sonic. (No, not that one, although they are both green.) What I mean by that is, while Sonic is definitely a show-off and can be a little bit arrogant sometimes, he’s not a jerk about it. Jet, on the other hand, is a braggart and a bully, all the worst qualities of Fleetway’s Sonic turned up to eleven. There’ll be more to say about him as the chapter goes on, so I won’t give away all my thoughts here. But I wanted there to be a clear contrast between these two speed demons: Sonic, the kind of guy you’re rooting for even when he’s showing off (especially when he’s showing off); and Jet, the kind of insufferable asshole who thinks he’s a lot cooler than he really is.

Anyway, those first two panels are very much a deliberate call-back to the end of Chapter 2, when Metal Sonic similarly attacked Eon.
