Commentary for September 19, 2019: Well, that escalated quickly. So, Doctor Eggman suddenly wants the ARK back, does he? But for what nefarious purpose? Well, I guess you’ll need to read on to find out, but I’ll just say it may have something to do with what happened at the end of the previous chapter. Anyway, blood. Death. Violence. I started Eon’s Comic back when I was quite young (less than half my current age, as I write this, actually), and an on-screen character death felt like a bit of a watershed moment for me. In fact, so significant of it to me back then was such that I have basically re-created that moment quite faithfully here. It was in the story that this chapter re-creates that the first on-screen death of Eon’s Comic took place, and it was an Echidna Empire mook being gunned down by Badniks during Eggman’s retaking of the ARK, just like here. (And by a completely unintentional coincidence, but one I am furiously chef kissing to as I write this, the first character to die here and in the original version is a green echidna mook.) And I made a very deliberate point of not killing any characters on-screen in Eon’s World Vol. 1 until now because of that. That said, I think I went a bit overboard with the violence as Eon’s Comic progressed. Again, I was quite young and a little naive about what makes mature story content. A story doesn’t have to be graphically violent to be mature -- in fact, it’s quite juvenile to fill a story with graphic violence, nudity, sex, and profanity to make it feel more mature. It wasn’t until quite a bit later, but I eventually got to the point where I showed characters being dismembered, beheaded, blown to pieces, and all with fountains of blood, of course, and I even did a bit of that as recently as Vol. 2, Chapter 7 (content warning: blood and gore). As I’ve demonstrated here, however, sometimes there will be blood. Blood happens when people get shot or stabbed, and this is a comic where (spoilers) four wars are going to happen before the end. I’m not going to sugarcoat war by making it bloodless. But I’m also not going to go to the almost comically absurd levels of gore that I was doing by my early 20’s. I’m not Quentin Tarantino, after all. |
