Commentary for December 23, 2019:

So, after the last page, of course Kari-Ya wants to one-up her mother. That is, I feel, a major part of Kari-Ya’s personality, and it may be reasonably described as a major character flaw -- the fact that she is always trying to do things bigger, better, and harder than Sora-Ya when she was in charge of the Echidna Empire. Sora-Ya wasn’t an attentive mother and she even drove Kari-Ya away from the Empire for a while (until she ran across of a certain Sith lord who took her on as an apprentice), so relations between the two have always been strained. But even the children of the most horrible and abusive parents sometimes want to still have some kind of relationship with those parents or just to know that their parents are proud of them. I feel there’s some of that with Kari-Ya, which is why she’s going to such extremes, above and beyond what Sora-Ya ever did.

I like to think that, long-term, Kari-Ya’s intention is to one day release Sora-Ya from prison (because she is still alive, just serving life imprisonment for her crimes). Once she has conquered the world (or the even whole system, maybe), Kari-Ya will have Sora-Ya released and brought to her, so she can show her mother the great empire she has built and finally earn her approval and hear those precious words, “I am proud of you, my daughter”. But given the kind of woman Sora-Ya is, that might be wishful thinking.

Anyway, did Knuckles almost say a bad word?!

Maybe, almost?

Back in the days of Eon’s Comic, I got to a point where characters would drop F-bombs with reckless abandon. I was young, in my late teens and early twenties, and I had the rather juvenile notion that gratuitous violence and casual swearing made my silly comic about anthropomorphic animals with superpowers gritty, realistic, and serious. It didn’t and it’s embarrassing to read some of that old stuff now. There’s a reason (well, several really) that it’s not available online to read anymore and I’m re-creating those stories completely in a much better format and with the writing skills and experience I have now.

Now, I’m not a prude. I don’t have a problem with bad language when the situation calls for it and I may even allow the occasional F-bomb after the fashion of Mass Effect 2. But I find flooding the dialogue with expletives distasteful and I’m not willing to have official Sonic the Hedgehog characters use language they don’t use in official media. That still gives me a few light curse words to work with, though, thanks to the game Shadow the Hedgehog, where “hell” and “damn” were frequently used, and thanks to the IDW Sonic comic, “crap” is on the table now too. But don’t expect Tails to ever tell Knuckles to go f*** himself.

Yes. That happened once in Eon’s Comic back in like 2007.

As with the previous chapters, I have now made an updated version of this page, which is larger, with clearer text, to make it consistent with Chapter 7 onwards. Hopefully, this will make the earlier chapters easier to read.
