Comic for February 05, 2011:

Commentary

I regret to announce that this will, in fact, be the final comic for now. I've got a lot of things going on right now and I need to take another hiatus. Some time this March, I expect to be moving away from Nottingham for quite some time (until the end of August at least) in order to take a job I've been offered on the Isle of Skye. Because of the logistics of travelling from here to Skye (most likely by train), I will have to leave a lot of my things behind to begin with, specifically my brand spanking new PC. I will have a netbook with me, but it doesn't have the RAM or the processing power to let me do more than write plans and scripts, unless I want a lot of frustration. With any luck, I'll be able to arrange for some of my things (my PC will be a priority) to be delivered to me on Skye some time after my initial arrival; but how soon this will be, I cannot say. In the interim, I intend to continue making preparations for transitioning away from sprites to something largely hand drawn. I'll be doing a lot of drawing for practice, as well as making models in Google SketchUp. If you haven't already seen what I've been doing on deviantART over the last few weeks, then take a look now.

Now, I know I said there'd be more than this before the next hiatus and I'm sorry that won't be the case, but this story turned out to be the perfect place to leave Eon's World for the time being. In the next story arc, I was going to begin the election cycle and introduce the new political alliances that have formed between the parties on Earth, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter, as well as the three main candidates, but I'd rather not start that only to leave it for several months before continuing. Leaving it here feels much more appropriate.

Anyways, that aside, I have used this comic as an opportunity to give you, the readers, a taste of things to come. You'll notice that, in panels 1, 14, and 15, I have used some of the 3D models I've been working on rather than sprites. Though the process will probably be more complicated in future comics than simply pasting the models onto a space background, like I've done here, this is what I am making the models for: to be used in my comic. This is the last sprite comic that I will make in this series. It may be the last I will ever make. When Eon's World returns later this year, it will be in a hand drawn format, using 3D models created in Google SketchUp to make vehicles, buildings, and other such regularly-shaped, artificial constructs that I'm not terribly good at drawing. With any luck, it should all work seamlessly, like it does in El Goonish Shive.

As to the comic itself, I'm not sure there really is much to say about it, other than to reiterate my earlier point that it feels like a good place to stop for now. I will say that Katsuni required brand new sprites, because she hasn't actually appeared in the comic for so long now that her existing sprites were terribly outdated. Rather than updating her existing look, however, I gave her a new one, based on this recent drawing I did, as a test run of my new PC. I was tempted to put her in a suit, similar to the things Silky wears, but I don't think that would fit Katsuni's personality.

Anyways, while the comic's on hiatus and I still have a damn good PC with internet access at my disposal, I shall endeavour to keep some kind of update going on the site. Possibly drawings or other images like the ones I uploaded during the summer hiatus last year. However, I'm not going to promise them on a bi-weekly or even regular basis like before, though I shall try to get as near to it as possible. My advice is to check back here once or twice a week and see what's happening.

Finally, I'd like to thank my readers for their praise, criticism, and general support throughout my comic's history. I hope you guys will still be there when it returns, hopefully looking better than ever.
