Commentary for August 05, 2018:

I had thought that sprites were a dead art when I started this remaster in January, 2018. It's true that, while many of the old sprite websites no longer exist, sprites as an art form do still seem to be going. But most sprite artists host their work in places like deviantART now. I guess it makes sense, since dA doesn't necessarily cost anything. That said, there are still some active sprite websites and I've found places like The Spriters Resource very useful during this project.

One of the things I wanted to do with the remaster (on second pass at least) was try to have less of the glaringly obvious MegaDrive era sprites, since I mostly use sprites from the GameBoy Advance era, and the two can clash rather badly. But, early on, I was using a lot of MegaDrive era Badnik sprites. The quality was probably about as good as you could expect for the time, but I've found that sprites from Sonic Mania are much nicer looking (which is hardly surprising, given it's a game over two decades more recent). So, where possible, I decided to swap out the old MegaDrive Badnik sprites for sprites from Sonic Mania. I don't think they're a perfect match, but I do think they look a lot nicer and fit in with the other sprites I'm using a bit better.

But that has meant a bit more work remastering some of these pages, and these two pages in particular... Well, I couldn't find the original backgrounds I used, so I re-created them from scratch. Naturally, once I'd finished pages #012 and #013, I did find those old backgrounds.

I always liked the Chaotix Crew in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, but I knew very little about who they were in the games, having never played Knuckles' Chaotix on the 32X. I looked up the game's story and used it as a loose basis for the Chaotix Crew's role in Eon's World, to begin with at least, which is basically the owners and managers of Carnival Island, a theme park resort on a small island in the Westside Archipelago. Having only seen the Chaotix Crew depicted in StC, I only had that to base their personalities on. Which is why Charmy is annoying and Mighty and Espio seem to hate each other. As for Ray, more on him next page.
